Hamiltonian Circle Actions with Minimal Fixed Sets

Consider an effective Hamiltonian circle action on a compact symplectic 2n-dimensional manifold (M, ω). Assume that the fixed set M 1 is minimal, in two senses: it has exactly two components, X and Y , and dim(X) + dim(Y ) = dim(M)− 2. We prove that the integral cohomology ring and Chern classes of M are isomorphic to either those of CP or to those of e G2(R), where e G2(R) denotes the Grassman...

Fixed-Point Free Circle Actions on 4-Manifolds

This paper is concerned with fixed-point free S-actions (smooth or locally linear) on orientable 4-manifolds. We show that the fundamental group plays a predominant role in the equivariant classification of such 4-manifolds. In particular, it is shown that for any finitely presented group with infinite center, there are at most finitely many distinct smooth (resp. topological) 4-manifolds which...

Fixed Points of Circle Actions

Let X be a finitistic space with its rational cohomology isomorphic to that of the wedge sum P (n)∨S or S ∨S∨S. We study continuous S actions on X and determine the possible fixed point sets up to rational cohomology depending on whether or not X is totally non-homologous to zero in XS1 in the Borel fibration X →֒ XS1 −→ BS1 . We also give examples realizing the possible cases.

Non-hamiltonian Actions with Isolated Fixed Points

We construct a non-Hamiltonian symplectic circle action on a closed, connnected, six-dimensional symplectic manifold with exactly 32 fixed points.

Topological properties of Hamiltonian circle actions

We study conditions under which a circle action on a symplectic manifold gives rise to an essential (i.e. noncontractible) loop in the group Ham(M,ω) of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms. A fixed point x of an S-action is called simple if the weights of the linearized action on TxM are 0 or ±1. We show that a circle subgroup that has a simple fixed point x and that is inessential in a semisimple L...
